Our story

Our program started with 20 weanlings in 2006, from Dean Reeves in Eagle Butte, South Dakota. Dean allowed me to purchase 60 years of breeding at one time. We added the top fillies from the next few foal crops from Reeves Ranch. Our plan was to sort through them as they grew, it proved more difficult than expected. The perfect heads, necks, and wide bodies made sorting very difficult. Visitors would pick one and say that is my favorite, after 4 to 5 favorites they would just decide that there were too many good ones to choose from.   Conformation was so good that sorting based on looks was impossible, we decided to let mother nature and time help us.   We sorted off the bottom, anything that didn’t meet our standards were sold.

We decided that a big boned, cow eating, Blue Valentine Stallion would fit our mares. In 2010 we purchased Plentys Hero from Gary Tarver of Gillette, WY.  Plentys Hero was purchased, site unseen, based on the word of Gary Tarver. Gary's description and assessment was perfect and we have never regretted this decision.  He was a 50% Mr. Roan Hancock with 25% King Ranch outcross on bottom. Plentys Hero was a 2010 foal, so now we were waiting again.

In 2013 we added Blue Valentine mares from Gary Tarver and Blue Valentine Headquarters, along with another stallion from Gary Tarver,  “GT Mr Player”.

We used various stallions such as One Famous Diamond (full brother to One Famous Eagle), Rowdy Blue Goose and other studs until Plentys Hero was of breeding age. Our Reeves mares worked on every horse used.

Plentys Hero was ridden and roped on for a while until it was clear that his speed and skills were excellent. His techniques resembled that of his King Ranch blood lines.

Our plan was clear, "Build our herd around Plentys Hero" who passed very important traits on to his colts; good minds, toughness, and technique.  These were instinctive in his colts.

Our herd development was always LONG TERM focused.  As we grew our herd, we added bloodlines that were proven and that complemented our herd.   Our colts love to have a job, what you teach them today, they will retain tomorrow. We have a limited number of studs and we use the best of them. Everything we have was purposefully selected for their traits. Our horses have shown to be successful in roping, barrel racing and all-around ranching work.

Our breeding experience feels that using linebreeding is important to narrow the gene field down to include more of the good qualities. Blue Valentine and Reeves Ranch have developed these separate lines that were of the best quality. Today we have a lot of consistency in our horses because of our approach with two linebred lines crossed together.  We breed them for intelligence and durability; big boned, good bodied, athletic, willing and overall good horse.   We wanted to raise horses that you enjoy being around and will lastfor years.   Nothing is more disappointing or expensive than having a horse of 8 to 10 years fall apart and lose all you have invested in them.

In 2018 we acquired DM Touche (Firewater Flitt over Dash Ta Fame) who was out of Famous Silk Panties and sired by FireWaterOnTheRocks. We began accumulating mares with good running blood to breed to him and were able to have  success. We used our One Famous Diamond daughters and newly acquired mares to produce barrel type horses.  Although this is not our main focus we enjoy being able to provide some diversity with these well bred horses.

Key Contributing Bloodlines to our Program

Reeves

These horses had no Joe Hancock blood in them and were cow bred with run.  The Reeves horses started back in 1935 and had a reputation for being tough well rounded and overall, very good using horses that were good bodied, big boned, structurally sound and that crossed well on everything. The family used these horses for everything on their ranches and would start many colts per year. Over the years their number in horses grew and they continued to carry on great genetics and bloodlines.

Blue Valentine – Hall of Fame 2024

Was used for calf roping, bulldogging, team roping and even did rodeo queen competition and barrels. He was good minded, gentle and acted like a gentleman around other horses.  As he was bred, you could see that Blue Valentine passed down his mind, disposition, speed, good bone, toughness, longevity and cow sense not only into his immediate offspring, but to many generations.
